12.14pm: Liza Minnelli has arrived on the red carpet, wearing a cobolt blue outfit and with blue hair.
11.59am: The Los Angeles Times says late last night, the academy decided to take down the tents protecting the arrival area from rain, and now "the carpet is very soggy, and publicists, journalists and photographers are sporting slickers over ball gowns and tuxedos".
Oscars trivia: The Dolby Theatre in the heart of Hollywood was on lockdown for a week ahead of today's ceremony. Guards stood at every door, and handlers with walkie-talkies kept a close eye on any visitors.
11.50am: The build-up to the Academy Awards hasn't been without controversy. One of the Oscars voting panel brutally dismissed most of the nominees, calling Julia Roberts "horrendous" and of the film she starred in, Gravity: "I've seen better in a planetarium". The voter said Meryl Streep's performance was "bottom drawer" and dismissed Leonardo DiCaprio's performance as "popcorn". Another best picture nominee, Tom Hanks' drama Captain Phillips, was an "unbelievably tedious and headache-inducing", the voter said.
11.40am: Ahead of today's awards show, Ellen DeGeneres spoke of her pre-show jitters, telling the Los Angeles Times: "I can't expect everybody to love me and like everything I do."
Oscars trivia: Ms DeGeneres is returning as host after making her Oscar debut in 2007 and she's had a close hand in the writing process, producers say.

11.10am: Today's ceremony from the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles will feature some of the tightest races in recent Oscar memory - making it a lure viewers will find hard to resist.
The tighter-than-usual races, include those for best picture and supporting actress.
American Hustle and 12 Years a Slave are up for best picture - a prize each claimed at the Golden Globes - along with Gravity, which won top awards from the directors and producers guilds.
Also in the running is Dallas Buyers Club, which stars actor and supporting actor front-runners Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto, The Wolf of Wall Street, Her, Captain Phillips, Nebraska and Philomena.
The Best Supporting Actress race is a dead heat between American Hustle star Jennifer Lawrence, and Lupita Nyong'o, who starred in 12 Years a Slave. Both have won honours in this category at other awards shows this year. They will also be two of the most watched stars on today's red carpet, with Nyong'o stunning the fashion world with her sartorial choices, particularly at the Golden Globes, this year.
